Militia Hits UN Base In E. Congo; 8 Attackers Dead

Militia Targets UN Base In Volatile Eastern Congo; UN Peacekeepers Kill 8 Attackers

(AP)  KINSHASA, Congo (AP) - The U.N. says peacekeepers have killed eight militiamen who attacked a U.N. base in volatile eastern Congo.

A statement said Monday the militia attacked a base near Virunga National Park over the weekend. The statement says the some 100 attackers were members of the shadowy Mai Mai militia.

A Congolese army official said the army killed two more attackers.

A U.N. military spokesman said no peacekeepers were wounded or killed.

In August, rebels attacked another peacekeeper base, killing three peacekeepers and wounding seven.

Repeated rebel attacks in Congo - including in areas long considered relatively peaceful - have called into question the ability of the U.N. force to protect civilians.
